Scaup-ish

Bird Sightings

These are the images that were taken of the "odd" duck on Sunday 18 September.

This is a condensed version of the range of views expressed by experienced birders who looked at these photographs

The beak looks heavy-ish and the impression given from at least two of the photos is of a Scaup.  The full, round head with no real hint of a tuft at the rear of the crown suggests Scaup but the possibility of a  hybrid was raised e.g. Pochard X Tufted or Pochard X Scaup. With lots of ducks emerging from eclipse or first summer plumage, although it looks just OK for an eclipse drake Scaup, on the photographic evidence it may be best to put it down as an Aythya hybrid or Aythya species, possibly a hybrid.

Further views that could lead to the identification of this duck are welcome and should be sent to james.cassels@virgin.net
